Translation has been studied from different perspectives and has long been a core issue for most sciences from Linguistics, to literature and from Philosophy to Politics. Pedagogies of translation however stayed behind. The study of the relation between Education and translation, how to teach translation, how to deskill translation, how to test translation and how to design translation courses did not have the due attention. Reasons for this may include the dominance of linguistic study, and the less attention paid to translation study by educationalists who focus mainly on language instruction as a whole rather than on a certain complicated skill like translation. In this book, Antar Abdellah reviews the place of translation with regard to Education, the common issues in translation pedagogy; defining, teaching, testing translation, and designing translation training programmes. He reviews the literature on pedagogies of translation in each of these aspects and proposes a new model for defining translation from a pedagogical point of view, and applies this model on the teaching techniques, the testing procedures and the design processes of translation within Education.
Antar Abdellah is associate professor of TEFL and foreign language Pedagogy. He has an MA in Translation theory and a PhD in designing translation curricula. His research interests include TEFL, TAFL, psycholinguistics and Translation. He taught Translation and TEFL/TAFL in the UK, Egypt and Saudi Arabia for more than 10 years.
