Die Gemälde von Valentin Hauri (geb. 1954 in Baden) entstehen seit 1994 "alla prima", also in einem Arbeitsgang, ohne Korrekturen oder Übermalungen. Was nach ihrer Vollendung dem Auge des Künstlers nicht standhält, wird verworfen und aussortiert. Inspiriert wird er häufig von der Art brut oder "Outsider Art", deren Authentizität Hauri fasziniert.
Nicht zuletzt wegen dieser Vorlagen lässt sich über die Bedeutung der Zeichen auf seinen Bildern trefflich streiten. Mit kunsthistorischen Strategien allein lassen sich diese Werke nicht erfassen, Emotion und Intuition sind gefragt. No Place but the One mit Texten von Konrad Bitterli, Daniel Morgenthaler und Markus Stegmann kombiniert sechs Bildstrecken mit Malereien aus den letzten zehn Jahren und zwei Zusammenstellungen neuerer Zeichnungen.

Anything that does not stand up to the artists scrutiny after it has been completed is rejected and sorted out. Hauri frequently finds inspiration in Art Brut, whose authenticity fascinates him.It is not least due to these references that the meaning of the symbols in his paintings can be heftily debated. Art-historical strategies alone cannot explain these works; emotion and intuition are required. No Place but the One, with essays by Konrad Bitterli, Daniel Morgenthaler, and Markus Stegmann, assembles six series of paintings from the last decade and two groups of more recent drawings.
