What are the ministries and roles of the Navy chaplain serving in a hospital setting? How does the medical staff view the chaplain? What are the medical staff´s expectation of their chaplain? The ministry, roles played and staff perceptions have changed over the past two decades as the chaplain is a member of a clinical team that provides holistic care to the patient, their families and the staff. Based on the findings of a quantitative survey sent to clinical staff, ancillary staff, Marines, and Sailors serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Okinawa, this book reviews historical paradigms and present institutional perspectives and attitudes regarding the value of the chaplain ministering in a U.S. Navy hospital. Since the chaplain ministers as a member of the interdisciplinary care team, it then reviews the Outcome Oriented Chaplaincy model in a clinical setting, and the potential impact of the Navy chaplain ministering as the spiritual fitness leader in a clinical setting.
Dr. Russell Hale, BCC, BCPC is a Lt.Cmdr. in the U.S. Navy and currently serves as the Command Chaplain For the U.S. Naval Hospital, Okinawa.
