The Christian Kabbalah, whose history is presented here for the first time, was considered the system of knowledge in the early modern era that was able to discover the forces of creation. These forces were thought to reveal themselves in the fields of alchemy, Hermeticism and astrology. The basic assumption of the Christian Kabbalah was that the secret knowledge of Judaism had been revealed in the Bible, but could not be understood adequately without Christian philosophy and dogma. Pico della Mirandola, Johannes Reuchlin, Heinrich Khunrath, Robert Fludd, Athanasius Kircher, Christian Knorr von Rosenroth and others represent this school of thinking.
