Over the past decade the diving industry has become a more and more important niche market in the tourism sector. The number of certified divers rises steadily but scientific research on sustainability in the diving industry is scarce. The paucity of underwater studies is connected to the relative recency of recreational diving. Therefore this work combines a variety of literature in order to identify opportunities and areas of problem. The first part provides an overview of the dive sector, including the history and the development of dive tourism, definitions and its relation to sustainability. Nowadays sustainability plays a major role in the tourism industry with an increasing number of destinations, businesses and individuals facing social responsibility to become "greener". This trend also exists in the diving industry and this study will shine a light on the attitude of recreational divers towards sustainability in the region of Dahab, Egypt.
I finished my studies in Innovation in Tourism Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Salzburg, Austria two years ago. Hospitality and tourism have always been my passion and so I took up diving in 2009 and became an Instructor in 2016. I have over 400 logged dives in Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt, Spain and South Africa.
